Tongue tie is a condition that can be seen in babies and adults of all age groups. The band of tissue under the tongue which connects to the floor of the mouth is called ‘frenulum’. Abnormalities with this tissue can have more negative consequences than anyone can realize. When this frenulum is too short or tight, patient may have diminished tongue control that could lead to improper speech and difficulty in eating – leading to not getting proper nourishment and sleeping problem, affecting their growth. We can correct a ‘tongue tie’ using scalpel as well as lasers. However by using lasers, we can be accurate and fast at removing the frenulum. The procedure usually takes about 5-10 minutes. After the ‘Tongue Tie Laser Surgery’ is complete, bleeding is reduced mainly because lasers help in cauterizing the blood vessels which is not in the case of ‘scalpel method’. In most cases, stitches and use of local anesthesia are also not required at the surgical site. We also teach some gentle tongue stretching exercises to our patients to promote healing and proper movement.
