Recent advancements in laser technology have greatly improved the treatment and management of not only periodontal problems but also other specialties in dentistry. Root canal treatment may be necessary for several reasons including: deep decay, repeated dental procedures on a tooth including re-occurrence of decay around old fillings or crowns, cracks/chips, and other trauma to teeth – resulting in injury to the pulp. At this point Lasers can be highly useful to target bacteria and infected materials with great accuracy, at times preserving more of the healthy tooth structure. They can also reduce discomfort by eliminating the disturbing sounds of drilling as well as limiting the need of local anesthesia. We also have noticed less bleeding during Root canal procedures and reduced post-operative discomfort and infection. The only limitation that we come across during laser assisted root canal treatments are while dealing with curved roots. The laser light beam travels in a straight line while some root canals are rarely straight or curved in a certain direction. In such cases traditionally used instruments come in handy as they are flexible to an extent of following the exact curvature of the tooth structure. The outcome of a root canal treatment is based entirely on the efficiency of disinfection of the root canals in a tooth and prevention of re-infection. The traditional Root canal treating method might be old-school and good but they are not always sufficient for root canal disinfection, making it the main reason for endodontic treatment failure.
