What are Fluorides? Is it good for You or Your baby’s teeth? Fluoride is the ionic form of fluorine, the 13th most abundantly occurring element in the Earth’s crust. They are naturally found in rocks, water bodies like rivers, lakes and streams. These days, they are majorly found in drinking water, toothpastes and mouthwashes. Scientifically, Fluorides strengthens tooth enamel by resisting tooth erosion by acids found in the food we eat, making it very good for yours as well as for your baby’s growing teeth. Our experts agree that its one of the best ways to prevent a tooth from decaying. How much is too much Fluoride? Its important to know that even though fluorides are found in bottled water or drinking water supply in some cities, the amount present is not enough. Children still need fluoride and benefit greatly from regular professional treatments between the ages of 6 months to 16 years. They are important for kids because the body incorporates fluorides into adult teeth, making them stronger and healthier. Is this process painful? Absolutely not, applying topical fluoride during a routine dental cleaning is painless and will not stain teeth. They also have a tendency of healing small cavities when applied professionally. The entire procedure takes a few minutes to apply and can be repeated 2-4 times a year. There is no discomfort after the procedure and children can eat or drink directly after application, if they choose.
